Spanish retail clothing chain Zara opened its first outlet in Singapore in the later part of 2002. The grand opening was picked up by the media, so I went with my friend to check out the clothes. It was madness, there were so many people eager to check out the collection that the next day, the newspaper quoted the store as saying ‘It was so crowded, people thought we were giving clothes away’. I still have the first item I bought from Zara, a basic round-neck tee. The popularity of the shop did not go away, and it was consistently crowded during peak periods.
Now there are four other outlets in Singapore; Great World City, Liat Towers, Marina Square and VivoCity.
