These in the picture are some of my father's correspondence with relatives in China. I will always remember one particular string of correspondence. One of my father's sworn brothers, the only son in his family, had passed on. Papa fulfilled Ah-Pek's last wish and after settling his funeral, continued to send money to his aged mother in China, under her son's name, regularly. I read one particularly poignant letter written by Ah-Pek's mother. In it she said she received the money 'he' sent her - but why, she asked, he does not write to her. What's his job? How's his health? What's she going to tell relatives and friends how's her son doing in Singapore? At the end of the letter, she reminded him to write, saying she is old, like a candle before the wind, and would dearly love to see her son before her departure.
