Today was the Racial Harmony Day for my school. The school had organized many interesting events for students to take part. The event that I got posted into was Chinese Dialects.
I thought, "Hmm that sounds interesting... maybe its a good idea to learn for Chinese dialects so that I'll be able to communicate with my grandparents better." So I went there, wanting to learn some hokkien or teochew.
However, when I went there, I realized that the teachers were not teaching teochew, and the hokkien group was already full. So my friends and I chose to learn Cantonese.
Personally, I didn’t really like Cantonese because of the weird pronunciations of the words and letters.
When the lesson started, we learnt how to pronounce the numbers from 1 to 10 in Cantonese. We then moved on to learn some useful phrases. I also learnt how to say my name in Cantonese, and also a tongue twister. The teachers then moved on to showing us funny clips made by people in Hong Kong, and although I did not really understand what it mean, the teachers were kind enough to explain the joke to us, which then I found out that it was really funny.
We were reluctant to leave the lesson as we wanted to learn more Cantonese. But we had to go for another session.
