My favourite aspect of Chinese New Year, besides being able to receive hong baos is the variety of snacks and goodies which are only available during this period. These include the ever popular pineapple tarts, kueh bangkit, love letters and other assorted treats. Nowadays these cookies have been given a modern twist, such as pineapple tarts with cheese. Sometimes I wish that these were available all year long, but I guess that adds to my fondness for these cookies. In the run up to the lunar new year, it is popular to give gifts of Bak Kwa. This results in long queues and price increases for this piece of sweet roasted meat.
