Books Kinokuniya, or Kino as it is commonly referred to among my friends has been in Singapore for a number of years. Its main outlet at Ngee Ann City is the largest in South East Asia. I remember going to the bookshop for the first time after it opened its doors and getting lost as it was so big. There were even maps provided showing the areas in which different subject matters could be found. Needless to say it quickly became one of my favourite hang outs, with such a huge variety of books and magazines available.
My first part-time job was working there as a retail assistant in the Children’s and Lifestyle section. I enjoyed being able to get my hands on the latest cook books that were available. To this day I have a large collection of cookbooks which I acquired over that time period.
The 5th Harry Potter book ‘Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix’ was released while I was still working there. There was much fanfare due to intense public interest in the books and we were required to wear special shirts advertising the book in the lead up to the launch.
