It’s lunchtime and you only have one hour for lunch. You don’t want to waste time by asking a colleague or friend to sit at the table while the rest of you order your food. Instead, all of you proceed to queue up for your food, leaving on the table a packet of tissue paper or some other object such as an umbrella to signify that the table has been ‘reserved’. A thoroughly Singaporean practice, you might say but one that’s commonly seen during lunchtime. Of course, not everyone agrees with this practice and there are some who will ignore or keep the tissue for themselves.
