I recently visited the Singapore Zoological Gardens and boy, has it changed since my previous visit, which was about ten years ago. I am very proud of the changes that the zoo has seen, because now it definitely looks much more attractive and modern, and in tune with Singapore’s efforts to be the destination of choice for tourists.
The shows put up by the show presenters were really interesting and exciting, even for a person like me who is so easily bored. There was one show in which the trainers hid a reticulated python in a hatch in the floor amongst the audience. I got a shock when they pulled out that huge thick python from 2 metres away from me. Boy, if the snake had escaped, what a field day the trainers would have had! But I think that it must have been safe to hide the snake there, or else the trainers would not have done so in the first place. During the shows, the animals kept popping out from different parts of the arena, not just the stage, and that was exciting, not to say the least.
The number of animals on exhibit also grew from the last time I came, a clear testament to one of the many improvements seen in the zoo. I never knew some animals ever existed – whoever has heard of a babirusa, a pig-like animal with two pairs of tusks?!? Another marked improvement I saw was the inclusion of the Ben and Jerry’s at the entrance. How shiok it was to eat New York Super Fudge Chunk in the hot sun. Perhaps they should consider setting up another Ben and Jerry’s inside the zoo itself. I was delighted that the farm animals’ area was still there, similar to what I saw ten years ago. I was able to relive my childhood memories from ten years ago.
It was a pity the last part of my zoo trip got rained out, but that led me to think about how much the zoo has improved over the past ten years. Singapore generates a great deal of income from the tourism industry and it is imperative that we keep upgrading our local attractions to keep up with the rest of the changing world.
From what I saw and experienced on my second zoo trip, I’d say, Well done zoo!
