There has been much discussion in the media in recent months over the image and look of the Singapore Girl. I was among the first few batches of Singapore Girls. In 1972, the Malaysian Airline System which was jointly owned by the governments of Singapore and Malaysia ceased to exist, forming Malaysia Airlines and Singapore Airlines run by the respective governments. I was 19 when I joined Singapore Airlines in 1974 as a Flight Attendant. We were lucky, as after the split Singapore Airlines took control of the Boeing 707 and 737 planes so that it could concentrate on developing the international routes. Thus I got my first taste of travelling the world. Back then, it was glamourous to become cabin crew, and the pay was quite generous compared to other occupations. I flew for eight years and was promoted to leading stewardess, visiting many countries and having the time of my life. Us crew stuck together on our travels. Some of the famous people on my flights included the late Teresa Teng.
