Pokémon, otherwise known as Pocket Monsters, is the longest running Japanese anime series on local television. Beginning in 1998, it chronicles the journey of protaganist, Ash Ketchum, as he sets out to achieve his goal of being the ultimate Pokémon Master. With cute creatures, hilarious plots and the heartwarming friendship between characters, Pokémon’s longevity can be attributed to its ability to retain viewers through the everchanging adventures of the characters. Unlike other animes for children, Pokémon continues to remain relevant as its popularity is not solely dependant on a particular toy (Beyblade, Digimon). Rather, the endearing relationships between Ash, his friends and his Pokémon proves that indeed, good storytelling can survive many seasons or even many generations.
This highly successful series spawned many equally successful video games, manga and toys. As testament to Pokémon’s immense success, till now, 2007, shopping malls in Singapore continue to hire giant Pokémon to perform on stage during shopping promotions. And judging from the enthusiastic response by children and parents alike, the adorable Pikachu and his Poképals look set to stay in the childhood memories of many Singaporeans.
