A few years ago, a famous American chain Cinnabon selling cinnamon buns made its appearance in Singapore with an outlet along Scotts Road. Shortly after its opening there was a second smaller outlet at Takashimaya Food Hall.
This was in 2001, and it was a short lived appearance as Cinnabon disappeared from our shores after only six months. I was quite upset, as they made the best cinnamon buns I have ever tasted. Warm, gooey cinnamon buns topped with a caramel glaze, I was in love. I managed to buy a few boxes of these sinfully delicious confections, which is why I have three cups at home with the Cinnabon logo. These tasted even better than those sold by St. Cinnamon, another chain selling a range of assorted cinnamon buns. I attribute this to the high selling price of the buns. One original Cinnabon retailed in the range of $5, while a St. Cinnamon bun only cost $2. Although the size of the cinnamon buns were bigger, this was perhaps too high a price to pay for budget conscious Singaporeans. There also wasn’t much publicity about Cinnabon and it never became a fad. It is unfortunate that Singaporeans never caught onto the craze, and I have yet to find a suitable replacement in local bakeries.
