I’ve lived in Eunos for most of my life. 20 years ago, the
neighbourhood looked quite different from the way it is today. It seems
like there’s always a two-story house being demolished, or the last few
remaining kampong houses making way for a mini condominium or a row of
three-story houses. Being an old Malay town, there used to be many old
kampong houses in my neighbourhood. I remember going to the corner shop
behind my house where there was a tiny provision shop set up in a
house. I remember having playmates across the street, attending my
first Malay wedding and watching their house being demolished while a
new three-story semi-detached house was built on the land.
Today my neighbourhood is a mix of the old and the new, a mix of
houses, condominiums, HDB flats, a church and even a mosque. When I see
the new houses that are being built, I wonder how people manage to
squeeze into them considering how small they are. What used to be a
bungalow has now been turned into three residences. When I was a child,
my playmates were my neighbours. I watched as each of them slowly moved
away while I am still living in the same house.
