Living in Singapore means that one is always near to the shops. You can’t fully appreciate how easy it is to go out and shop until you’ve lived overseas in a regional area and it takes you two hours just to travel to the city, and that’s only the train journey. As such, we are constantly bombarded with things to buy, ‘the latest IT bag’ or ‘wedges: this season’s shoes’. Take a walk down Orchard Road and you are bombarded with women dressed to the nines and togged out in designer gear.
Ever since I was a teenager I wanted a Christian Dior handbag. This became a reality last year when I got my very own Dior Trotter handbag, in my favourite colour pink. This type of bag is what I call a ‘high maintenance’ bag. I didn’t know that the metal chains were prone to tarnishing/rusting as it is not made of stainless steel. This stained the leather straps, so I went back to the boutique to ask if anything could be done. I was advised by the sales assistant to use Nonya powder on the metal chains to prevent them from rusting. I was quite surprised to hear this as no mention had been made when I bought the bag. Since then I have used Nonya powder to polish my sterling silver jewelry pieces and it has worked quite well
