I used to live in a kampong along Yio Chu Kang Road (Track 23). It was the most wonderful 17 years of my life. :) I spent most of my childhood time catching guppies in the longkang (i.e. drain) and looking for spiders amongst the panda leaves plantation. The big brothers taught me where to find the "spider king", but I could never find it. :(
My family and I lived in a zinc-roofed house. Mine was an extended family. I lived with my grandparents, my grand uncle and 2 uncles. I always look forward to weekends when my cousins would come visit us. :D I would bring them around the kampong, showing them the bird nests I had discovered or the little chicks that just hatched. :) Life was good.
I miss those days. It's a pity we have to give up these kampongs to make way for modern civilisation. Well, I guess this is inevitable. Land is scarce in Singapore, we have no choice :|
Oh yah, if you're curious where this kampong I'm talking about WAS. It WAS somewhere near the present CTE/SLE. It was removed to make way for the expressway.
I've got some pics of my kampong to share. I'll find a scanner and have them scanned & uploaded. Stay tuned!! :)
