As a child (that was around ten years ago), I always looked forward to Saturday mornings, as SBC (Singapore Broadcasting Corporation, the predecessor of TCS, Television Corporation of Singapore, the predecessor of MediaCorp) would show Power Rangers on the television, followed by the series Sweet Valley High. I thoroughly enjoyed such serials, as was the trend amongst children at that time.
I also remember other cartoons, such as Smurfs, Heman, Princess Starla and the Jewel Riders, Dark Wing Duck and Alvin and the Chipmunks. My favourite cartoon was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, as I thought four crime-fighting turtles with different fighting specialties was a cool idea.
There were also the Channel 8 drama serials, and I remember the very first one – The Awakening, starring a very young Xiang Yun and Huang Wenyong. The mandarin drama serials were shown every weekday at 3 p.m., 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. They usually rotated between Desmond Shen, Zoe Tay, Li Nan Xing, or had them all in the same show (some show about being in the navy).
Of course there were the English variety shows, such as the Pyramid Game, Asia Bagus and even Wheel of Fortune. The Pyramid Game was shown every weekday after Wheel of Fortune, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. That was how I spent my weekday evenings after doing my homework.
