In 1996 the MOELC moved to a new campus in Bishan from its old Newton campus. For five years I went to the MOELC twice weekly during school term for my French lessons. On many occasions I wished that I could drop the language but unfortunately I couldn’t, as French was considered my 2nd language. French was never a strong subject for me, so I struggled each year with the language. In Secondary Three, immersion programmes were organised for students. I took this opportunity to host a student from Paris in June of 1998 and she returned the favour when I went there at the end of the year. The number of students studying a foreign language tended to drop considerably for each higher level, so much that by the pre-university level there were only two classes run. Like me, a majority of these students studied French as a 2nd language so we were in it together. This picture was taken with my classmates for my pre-university class. That was the highest level which I needed to pass for entrance into a local university.
