Bukit Timah Road used to be the longest road in Singapore before the expressways were built. Those days in the 70s', the different stretches were named by "miles". Small towns were setup along the road. Of significance are:
Ten miles (Bukit Panjang) - most of the shophouses were torn down now. One shopping centre, Ten Miles Junction, still retains the name
Seven miles (Upper Bukit Timah)- the most famous landmark, Beauty World, has been demolished since the late 70s. It was truly a maze of shops built with wooden structures, and you could easily get lost there. I did! This area has been transformed to an upmarket residential hub, with high-rise condos and a number of shopping centres and trendy restaurants.
I spent a good 25 years living, growing up, studying and working along the various stetches of Bukit Timah Road. It always brings back the old memories every time I travel down this road.
