My Hero
What is a hero? A hero is someone that you look up to or someone who has inspired you, fuelled your hopes and dreams and influenced your lives in meaningful ways. And who is my hero? It’s none other than my brother!
My brother came into this world 3 months earlier than was expected; such was his eagerness to see this world. Now Mark is a 15 year old boy who is extremely short-sighted. He looks nerdy when he wears his spectacles. Although he doesn’t like to put on contact lenses, I think he looks more handsome when he has them on. I am also short-sighted like him and my parents but not as bad. I also would like to put on contact lenses when I am older as I would not like to look like a nerd.
His PSLE results were not good enough for a scholarship but he earned it back during the Secondary 3 selection test. By the way, he is studying in Raffles Institution, where I think all the nerds are. He got in through the Direct School Admissions scheme. He was smart enough to get in through the Academic (Science) selections. There were fewer applicants, in fact only four including him.
He is good in Science as he always reads the encyclopedia as if it is a story book. He is also good in Mathematics as he loves to work out problem sums. He loves reading books although his English is average. He has an interest in computer and he is in his school’s Computer Elective Program. I always ask him for his advice when I am doing my project or presentation assignment.
He hates to help me in my studies especially in Science but he is forced to do so as my Mum is only good in Chinese and Mathematics. However when he starts helping me, he forgets that he hates it. That’s his love for Mathematics and Science. He also inspires me to get good results because his results are good especially in Mathematics and Science. When I have got results, he rejoices with me as he appreciates the fact that he has a part in it.
He is a talkative and jovial boy. There is never a dull moment when he is around. He never fails to brighten my day as he always has good jokes or riddles to share. He is always willing to lend a helping hand when I need help but only in Science and computer work.
Sometimes we may quarrel but it never lasts. Either we make up willingly or my mum will intervene which is worse for both of us. Our quarrels are easily forgotten. Occasionally, he may vent his anger on me but he apologises after a while when he has cooled down.
For all his short-comings, he is still my hero as he inspires me to give my best in everything I do. I would like to go to Raffles Girls Secondary School and my brother is going to help me, all the way. No matter what, he is my hero!
