My Hero

In life, you will meet many people but surely, there will be one whom had helped you before and you’re grateful to. Well, for me, I am very grateful to my aunt who has since passed away. I’ve learnt a lot of things from her.

Since young, I have been living with my aunt. She had dark skin colour, short curly black hair, dark brown eyes, dimpled cheeks and a small mouth. She is asthmatic and also had heart problems. As I spent most of my time with her, we enjoyed a close relationship. I stayed in her house until Primary One, when I had to go home and start my primary school life. I even went to a pre-school near her house as I only go back home on weekends. While I was staying there with her, she usually cooked lunch for herself and me as there were only the two of us at home normally.

At that time, I would usually complete my homework after lunch. I still remembered how I had struggled with my homework! I could not understand certain questions too! I’m sure you would be wondering how I managed it.  It was my aunt who had helped me with them. Instead of resting or getting an afternoon nap, she just sat down and spends an hour or so to explain and teach me. For that, I am really grateful to her. If she had no bothered to teach me, I would not be able to do as well, academically, as I am now.

As I grow older, she also aged. Thus, her health also deteriorated. She fell sick easily. Despite her poor health, she still cooked for me. I could still remember how I clutched tightly onto the metal bars of the door when I did not want to go home as I wanted to stay with my aunt. Sometimes, I felt even closer to her than my mother. She taught me a lot of things which made me understand the facts of life. For example, things happen without our knowledge. Neither would we want them to happen, in the end, we would still have to accept them.

Sometimes, I watched how she cooked when she was cooking dinner. By observing her, I somehow managed to learn the basics. When she had the time, she would teach me how to cook some simple dishes too, such as steam rice and fried eggs.

But all these did not last long as she is already dead. For me, her death is impossible to forget. Mainly because she died on my birthday in the year 2004. That was when I was in Primary Two. It was a great blow to me. I felt so lost when I heard about her death. I only knew about it three days later. But something amazed me. When she was pronounced dead, I was at home with my mother and sister when I suddenly cried. My sister, who was already asleep by then, woke up to ask me why I was crying. I remembered that the only words I said were,“ I miss aunt.” Repeatedly, in cantonese. It was exactly the period of time when my aunt had passed on.

Despite the many years after she had died, I can still remember all the things she had done for me and I shall always do. She truly is my hero.
