My hero would be my mother, who had been taking care of me since I was born. She is the one who watches me grow up, guides me about what is right and what is wrong. She has lovely hair, a beautiful face and a nicely-shaped body – although she does not really agree on that.
My mother has taught me the various ways of life, and how to respond in urgent situations. One of the things she taught me was respect. She told me that in order to gain respect from others, we have to respect them ourselves. So now, I try to treat others like how I want to be treated. For example, by not discriminating others of their weaknesses, and paying attention to others when they are talking.
She has also taught me about being responsible. Being responsible is important as others can then rely on me and trust me. Being relied on is a good feeling, as you will feel important to them, while being entrusted with many responsibilities. Of course, trust is important too, especially in relationships with friends. With trust, your friends will be more willing to share secrets with you; and I always think sharing secrets with close friends are fun! I was amazed that being responsible can help me in so many different things in my life.
My mother is also understanding. Once, I did badly for a test, she knew that I already felt bad about it and did not reprimand me. Instead, she encouraged me to do well for the next on-coming test. With that, I did not feel much stress albeit under high hopes.
My mother does not know how to cook. But she does hone her culinary skills now and then. I loved the steamed egg that she had once made. I have also whipped up some simple dishes with her as well. Some of the dishes we made were scrambled eggs, fried hotdogs, and baked beans – which were our breakfast eggs for one Sunday morning. They were extremely delicious! Not bad at all, first-hand experience.
My mother is an executive accountant for a restaurant called ‘Lemongrass’. She leaves home as early as 7.30a.m. in the morning and comes back at about 8.p.m at night. Even after a tiring day at work, she never failed to do some housework everyday. When I was young, I used to think that she is a superwoman! I do help out with the simple chores too. Like doing the laundry and wiping the tables. We also hired a part-time maid to come once every fortnight to mop the floor and clean the toilets.
Usually, we would go to the library or to the movies together. Or else, we would just walk around in shopping centres aimlessly, observing people or posters. At times, I do learn a new word or two! These trips are so fun and interesting!
May you live to a ripe old age, Mother!
