My Hero

He’s helped me many times and once saved my life. In my heart, he is my hero.

When I was 6, I entered Rosyth Primary, the same primary school as my older brother, Zikai.

During primary one, orientation day was easy for me as I enjoyed going to school. As I got to knew more and more friends, I became more outspoken.  The teachers were wonderful, caring, kind and I was nominated to become the class monitress.

The job was fun as I was supposed to keep the class neat and disciplined. However, when it came to class discipline, the monitor and I were not very good at it and often got scolded.

Before classes started, I always played soccer with my brother and his classmates from class 5-11. We had loads of fun and often played till the bell rung.

I sat next to an Indian boy in class and his name was Muthu. In the beginning of the year, we always talked in class and completed pair work assignments the fastest.

However, as weeks passed, he took advantage of the fact that we were close friends and started teasing me. One month passed and the teasing became bullying. He started using books or papers to hit my head.

I beared with it but the bullying continued when I was lining up after school to take the school bus home. Then there was once, my brother noticed, went up to him and said: “Eh boy, what are you trying to do? Why I always see you disturbing my sister? Can you please stop it and go back to your seating place?” After talking to Muthu, my brother went to tell my form teacher, Mrs Beh.

The day after that, Mrs Beh changed my seating place with one of my classmate, si min. Since that day, muthu did not bully me and talked to me once in a while. I was so happy that my brother came to my rescue and had always respected him.

Another incident was when I was primary 6. My brother had graduated from Rosyth Primary and my maid and him came to pick me up after school.

When we were walking home, I was so engrossed reading my archie comic that my brother had to stop me from hitting into any pillar.

The incident happened when I was crossing the road. I was so engrossed in reading that I did not see an incoming taxi.

Everyone on the left pavement had stopped to wait for the taxi to pass however, my maid and my brother had already reached the right side pavement. I did not realise this until my brother pulled me up to the right pavement.

The taxi was quite close to me and horned at me for not looking out.I was soo shocked that I took 10 seconds to recover to my normal self. In my heart I was thinking: I was this close to being banged down by a taxi, why did I read while walking…

I regretted reading while walking and was so lucky that my brother saved me. He reprimanded me for not looking and I felt really guilty. From then on, I did not dare to read while walking.

The hero in my heart is my brother, Zikai.
