One says that you do not have to save a life to be a hero but just move and touch someone and not as in physically touch or move him or her, but spiritually and emotionally.

It all happened two years ago, on a dark stormy night. The darkness fell like a shroud, shrouding the fear deep inside me and I was battling it with all my might by turning on all the lights in the room. My parents were out for a wedding dinner. I was left all alone.

Claps of thunder could be heard and flashes of lightning blinded my eyes. In a twinkling of an eye, my whole room turned pitch dark. A blackout. Oh no… I could not even see my own fingers in the dark. My fear escalated, praying hard that my parents would be home soon. I searched frantically for the salvation of the darkness-torchlight.

Tears started to trickle down my cheeks, I blamed myself for not joining my parents for the wedding dinner, otherwise, I would not have been in that plight. How I wished Daddy or Mummy could be with me during that crucial moment and I realized I had been taking them for granted all those while. All these growing up years, I have been protected by my beloved parents under their wings, no harm, no fear could inflict on me. But at that moment, I was lost, confused without those two heroes whom I had been regarded as it was their jobs to take care of me.

Oh, thank God, I found the torchlight. Turning it on and fumbled my way to the phone to call my hero – Mummy. Before I could reach out to the phone, it rang. My savior, my hero called? Even the ringing sound of the phone sounded melodiously to me.

‘Son, are you ok?’ It was Mummy on the other line, sounded as sweet as before, her soothing and comforting voice had taken my fear away for a moment. I broke down in tears and sobbed, ‘Mummy, I’m scared. When are you coming back? Please be home soon, I need you, I want you.’ My pleading cry might have broken Mummy’s heart and she replied, ‘ok, I’ll be home soon. Don’t panic, pray to God for courage while waiting for us ok!’

I started praying and thinking of those rude and harsh moments I had with Mummy always, hurtful words that had disappointed and broken her heart. I was remorseful. Could all those that happened serve me a lesson to treasure and show respect on her more.. I certainly did learn a lesson hard.

The merciless thunder and lightning continued to roar and flash incessantly. Suddenly, I saw a figure walking in the storm with an umbrella, braving herself in the harsh weather towards my direction. Another flash of lightning lighted up and I could see clearly. It was Mummy, my hero. But… Where was Daddy? Why Mummy did not come home with Daddy in his car? With those questions floating in my mind, I raced towards the door and swung opened it with my arms readily wrapping around Mummy. My poor Mummy, she was soaking wet.

Mummy told me there was a massive traffic jam about fifty metres away from our home. A big tree was being struck down and laid across the three lanes of the expressway. Thinking it could halt the traffic for the next hour, Mummy had decided to walk home in the storm to be with me soonest while Daddy continued to stay in the traffic jam.

I was thankful, grateful and tears choked my throat but I managed to utter out, ‘thank you, Mummy!’

Ever since, I regard Mummy as my hero. A hero who is constantly protecting, guiding and guarding me without any complaints. Thank you and I love you, My Hero.
