My Hero

My grandfather is a person who has guided me from young; he always cares for me and loves me with all his heart. Whatever I want, he would buy it for me. When I was young, he would teach me many things about life. I could vividly remember all his lessons. Although he cannot speak in English, I knew exactly what he is saying in Mandarin. Although he does not live with me, he spends most of his time with me. He really is the greatest grandfather in the world……

My grandfather is now over seventy years of age, and I am turning eleven. I could remember my childhood clearly, when I spent most of the times with him. He was an excellent cook. All the dishes he placed on the table, I would slowly gobble them up, one by one. I could remember an incident which happened when I was seven to eight years ago. I was sitting near the refrigerator hiding away from my elder brother, who was then about five to six years of age. He was pretty smart and intelligent, and was sometimes a little mischievous and even diabolic. So, when I sat on the ground, my grandfather started to fry some marinated chicken. I was giggling there, when suddenly, an acute pain formed on my body and it was so painful that I began to yell and holler. My grandfather stopped cooking immediately and attended to me. I was burnt by drops of hot oil from the wok, and my grandfather would apply some herbal paste onto my wounds gently.

When I was six, I could remember one evening when my brother, my grandfather and I were coming back from the food centre near my house. I stood on a curb with my grandfather and my brother, hands-held, waiting for the vehicles on the road to drift past. When I thought the road was safe, I began to cross alone, stepping off the curb, but all of a sudden, a speeding motorcycle raced out from the side of the road, and I stood rooted to the ground. The motorcycle headed towards me at a break neck speed when my hand was tugged, and dragged away by my grandfather. I was grateful to him, although he gave me a harsh reprimand after that incident.

When I was seven, my grandmother suffered a stroke due to smoking. My grandfather went back to take care of her and could only come during the weekends. I was so depressed that I cried that very night. No more mouth-watering foods…… No more going to the market together…… I was alone. My parents soon hired a maid to take care of me and my brother.

When I was eight, my love for my grandfather soon started to vanish. I could rarely see him, and I did not care much either. Then one night, when I was ten, my grandfather felt that he could not breathe. I was sound asleep then, and did not know, till the next day. My parents brought him to the hospital, for a full-body check-up. The doctor had found water in his lungs, and decided to extract the water. I visited him regularly in the hospital, usually at night, after school. After a week or two, my grandfather was discharged. As my aunt who was living with my grandmother quitted her job, she could take care of my grandmother, while my grandfather could stay with me. I was rejoiced…….

These fond memories of me and my grandfather would stay forever etched in my brain, as he is my grandfather, my hero……
