My grandmother is 63 years old this year.  She is still strong despite having gone through a heart operation last year.   Grandma is petit in figure and keeps a neat hairstyle.  Grandma leads a simple life.  She does not wear make-up, or put on jewellery.   My grandma looks after me since birth as my mum is a working woman.  She feeds me, bathe me and takes care of me during my infant days.  She also fetches me to kindergarten and would make sure my food is hot when I’m back.  Grandma would make sure I have my necessary naps in the afternoon.  She would also take my brother and I for evening walks even when she is busy preparing for dinner. When I am sick, grandma tends to me lovingly that I can feel the warmth in my heart.

I remembered one incident when I was sick, Grandma was suppose to meet up with her friends that she had not seen for quite some time.  She sacrificed the outing and tends to my needs, without even feeling upset or disappointed.  I felt loved but at the same time, sad that she had to miss this outing that she had looked forward to so much.  Grandma is a self-sacrificial person who has hardly put her own needs first but of her family members.  When Grandpa was not earning much during their early days, Grandma would scrimp and save to make sure the family does not lack of food or clothing, to the extend of skipping meals on herself on some days.  There are times when she will do some sewing for neighbours to supplement income for the family.  On days when she has more than extra income, she will buy food for some poorer neighbours on the same block.

During weekends when I goes back home with my parents, Grandma would call and make sure everything is fine with my brother and myself.  Being a devout catholic, she will faithfully go to church every weekend, and thereafter head straight to the supermarket to do marketing for the coming week.  She would make sure my brother and I get the freshiest food and will not settle for second best.  She is surrounded by my aunts, uncles and cousins as we usually have family outings or gatherings.  This is the time when she is most happy as she can be with her loved ones.  When I have not done well in my exams, grandma would remind me to do better next time.

Everyday when I go back home, I know that my Grandma would be waiting for me with love.  Whatever bad days that I might have in school, I know that she will always be there for me, to listen and to encourage me.  I will always love her  and will take of her in her ripe old age.  In my heart, there is no grandmother in the world that can be compared with her.  Like my favourite fruit mango, she is always sweet.
