According to Webster dictionary, a hero is being described as a person who is ADMIRED for his ACHIEVEMENTS and NOBLE QUALITIES. My daddy fits this description of being a hero. My daddy is an ordinary man with extraordinary capabilities. To the eyes of many, he may look perfectly normal. However, he has a hearing defect- he was born deaf.

Being a hearing impaired person, he is bound to face with difficult circumstances and challenges. Instead of looking at the dark side of life, he persists and presses in. Even he graduated from a deaf school, he trusted in God that he could continue in a main stream school. After much perseverance, my daddy enrolled himself into the Singapore Polytechnic to do a five-year course for a diploma in architectural technology in 1990. Being the only deaf student in class, he displayed an excellent attitude towards his studies. All he could rely on was the lecture notes given and lip reading of the lecturers. He put in extra effort in every assignments and projects. The lecturers were impressed by his diligence and determination. My daddy did well enough that he was offered to do another two years of advanced diploma in multimedia development. He was featured twice in The Straits Times. He also received an inaugural award for lifelong learning. Despite this, he remains a humble person. Today, he is secured with a good paying job at DP Architects.

The strength of a gentleman is the gentleness of his words. His hand signals and the movement of his lips are important to me as it is our method of communication. My daddy is patient and always motivates me to do well for my studies. I remember the times he encouraged me when I was feeling afraid about my exams. I failed to be laterally transferred to secondary 2 Express but he did not give up on me. He continued to trust in me. With his love and support, I managed to be promoted to Secondary 3 Express.

During the days when my daddy had to juggle a full-time job and studies, he never failed to take the family out on weekends. He could have used the time to study but he prioritizes us before his studies. Even though he had to handle work and studies, he was always there for us. I remember there was a time when I was rebellious and took my daddy for granted. I would get angry and not speak to my daddy for several days. Nevertheless, he was patient with me. He continued to nurture me in his loving care. My daddy is truly the man of the household. He makes sure that everything is in order and does not push the housework to my mummy. Instead, he helps out with most of the household chores. My daddy is my hero because he is capable and everything a father can be.

Daddy, I just want to say thank you for everything. Although your salary is not very high, you are willing to give me expensive tuition in order for me to do well in my studies. I know you have not given up on me. I will study hard and do you proud. I love you loads with lots of hugs and kisses. You are the best!!
