My great grandfather, my forever hero
My hero is my great grandfather; Chen Hong Ping. He is just like any other ordinary people like you and me. My great grandfather is an ordinary person but he displayed extraordinary spirits. He possessed qualities such as courage, determination and loyalty.
To me, I look up to my great grandfather as not only a hero but also a devoted family man. My great grandfather is a local Chinese and has continuously led efforts to raise funds to aid his country to fight against the Japanese during World War Two despite his privileged background and success as a businessman. He is a devoted family man and had done a lot for his family members. He was forced to leave his family to fight for his country. He participated in anti-Japanese activities, particularly in supporting the relief fund. I admired him for his loyalty towards the country.
In the past, my great grandfather used to talk to me about his experience and spirits in fighting the war, but unfortunately, he passed away on 12 December 2002. At that time, I was only in primary four. I have a deep affection for my great grandfather as he is the one who took care of me and played with me since young. His passing had immensely affected my mood. At the beginning, I felt lost when my great grandfather was not around me as he was the one who played with me and was concerned about my daily work.
My great grandfather was the head of the family and everyone at home respected him. Although at times he may be strict with us but he was also very caring towards us. He is a man of principle and a man of perfection. He would always want to achieve the best in everything he does. He also displays a strong compassion and loyalty towards his country and friends.
I remembered vividly that my great grandfather once told me that during world war two, he was still very young but he was already held in high regard by the people for his patriotism, leadership and organizational abilities. But soon after, he was captured by the Japanese after infiltrating into the Japanese territory. He was imprisoned and was subjected to continuous interrogation. At that point of time, my great grandfather was already in weak health. Strong and determined as he was, he battled through all sorts of physical and mental torture but he still refused to give up information about his fellow battle friends. He told me that the cruel and heartless Japanese soldiers punished him severely for disobeying their orders.
Miraculously, my great grandfather managed to escape the death’s jaws. Soon after the surrender of the Japanese, my great grandfather was freed and all his family members were relieved that he finally came home alive.
For people like my grandfather had inspired me to overcome my fear despite the difficulties faced and never betray my country or friends, regardless of the consequences. He is my beacon, my guide and it is him that made me realize the true meaning of life.
