My grandmother, my hero
Superman and wonder woman are not the only heroes in the world. Heroes can be ordinary people like you and me, regardless of the age. To me, a hero is an ordinary individual who finds strength to persevere, the courage to move on and the willingness to sacrifice. That is why my hero is my Grandmother.
Courage, which is something in which most heroes possess. it motivates and influences people to make positive changes around them. In society, people believed that being diagnosed with cancer means to live helplessly. But my grandmother chooses not to give up any strain of chance for survival. Moreover, she never fears of death. Her inner strength and courage allowed her to live three years more. As time pass, she gets weaker and weaker but despite of the pains and sufferings she had to face, she will never fail to smile right before us.Sometimes, she would even encourage other patients to live on.Her courage in facing death inspired everybody around her to precious everyday and minutes. She had also proven that cancer is nothing to fear for. In short, her inner strength and courage had allowed her to serve as a role model to people who are fighting against death and teaches people to look at things in a more optimistic way. Because of her, I am now able to cope with my phobia towards death.
Another admirable quality that my grandmother possesses is her selflessness. Being just a retired nurse, during the time where SARS strikes Singapore, many nurses quitted their job for their own safety. However Grandmother was prepared to risk her life in order to save more people. Without people like my grandmother, these SARS attack would have killed more people. Her selflessness has allow more people to survive through this SARS period. It inspired me that a real hero will do something for others without wanting anything in return.
Besides that my Grandmother is willing to sacrifice for anyone. Grandmother told me about her encounter with a Japanese soldier which makes me admire her as mighty person. During the Japanese occupation, it is very risky to walk on the streets because there were Japanese soldier all around the region and if one was caught carrying rice, the person will be executed. Hence, everyone in the kampong starved and many people turned ill which included my grandfather. At the time, Grandmother decided to take a risk out and carry some rice back for everyone. She placed the bags of rice at the bottom of the basket of her bicycle and cover it over with some watermelon. But despite her carefulness, she was spotted by a Japanese soldier on her way back to the kampong. However Grandmother remained calm and she quickly bride the Japanese soldier with some watermelons and fortunately the soldier took the watermelons and went off thinking that the basket were all watermelons only. Her calmness and bravery ness saved her from the execution and she in return saved many starving villagers. From her story, I started to take her as my hero because her actions greatly touched me and also influence me that any difficulty can be easily deal with if we are calm and also changed my mindset that man are not the only one who is able to help out in a society.
In conclusion, my grandma may not be as extraordinary as superman or wonder woman. However she has inspired me and has make changes in my life, she is the one who encouraged me in overcoming many high obstacles in my life. She is the one who makes who I am today .She is my hero.
