When I was young, my grandmother told me many stories about famous people who had contributed to the society and how she looked up upon them as her idol. But in my mind, she was my hero.

My grandmother, a hero that I will remember forever and I will always feel proud of. She was a woman in her seventies with short curled hair. She always wears this old spectacle of hers which is in a bad condition just because she could not bear to throw it away. Also, she always dresses with all those shirts with flowering designs on it, with a knee length pants and a pair of shoes with little holes on it. She also does what many grandmothers would do such as going to the market and cooking. Though she was this ordinary, she was a hero of mine as she possesses several qualities that caused me to regard her as my hero.

My grandmother taught me many important values so that I would be a better person one day. There was this one incident during the holidays at my father’s shop. I went to help out as it was around the period where school re-opens. Back then, we were so busy that we hardly had time to breathe. It was like mission impossible as there were just too many customers to handle. After we had fought the toughest battle yet, while we were checking out the remaining stocks available, we found out that some shoes were missing. Everyone was boiling like hot soup and fuming with rage as we did not expect there would be such dishonest people around. But my grandmother remained expressionless like a statue. We were puzzled and started questioning her reaction. I could recall clearly and she said this, “This is a lesson for everyone, be honest in everything you do.” That time, I was not convinced by what she had told us as anger had completely overpowered my mind until when I really got older and started to understand.

Not only she taught me important values of life, she also helped me out when I am in need. I was scalded by a bowl of piping hot noodles then. I could recall it vividly like crystals. The pain was unbearable, worse than one who got sun burnt. That time, my grandmother instinctively came to my aid, faster than a speeding bullet. She carried my giant weight body across many streets to the nearest clinic. I could see her face portraying expression of anxiety. I could also hear her heart beating so irregularly fast like riding on a roller coaster. Furthermore, she took care of me after that, day after day without complaints. I was touched by her actions and it changed my perception of life. Even though it was a norm for grandparents to react in such desperate situation when their grandchild is in danger, after all, she was a hero to me.

Now that I am considered a grown up, with a mature thought of my own. I really hoped that time can be reversed. But unfortunately, this was not going to happen in reality. My grandmother's age was catching up with her and she was not that strong as before. Even so, the memories of her heroic act will be anchored in my heart forever. I really appreciate what she had taught me and helped me over the years. Without this hero of mine, I would not be able to become who I am today. Moreover, I will pass down what she had taught me to the later generation so that people will remember her as a hero who exhibits integrity and determination.
