My Grandmother, My Hero

A hero can be a person distinguished by exceptional courage, nobility and strength. A hero can be a principal character in a play or movie, novel or poem. However, my hero is different. My hero is a woman who neither has magical powers nor the ability to save the people on earth when there is catastrophe. My hero is filled with love and she gives warmth to everyone around her. My late grandmother is my hero.

In my deep impression, granny had uncountable wrinkles on her face and a bunch of curly grey hair. She was a strict and fierce woman. Yet, she showered altruistic love and concern to our big family. Granny lived a hard life since young, she was not born with a silver spoon, thus it was not surprisingly that she had to give up her studies and to work for her family. Grandmother had to work at a young age while some children were having euphoric childhoods. She had to wake up early in the morning to make desserts that were needed for her to sell around the neighbourhood. Grandmother’s life was not a smooth and easy one, however, my father said that granny has no complaints at all. This was the reason why I felt that grandmother was a kind hearted and thoughtful woman.

Grandmother had low qualifications as she was not well educated when she was young. This was why granny had a difficult time finding an appropriate job when she was older. Nevertheless, after much efforts and time she put in, she managed to find a job that suited her and the pay was adequate. It was not very long when grandmother got to know her husband, whom was my grandfather. They eventually got married and started to set up their blissful family. My grandmother had many sons and daughters, whom one of them is my father and the rest are my uncles and aunties. She and grandfather had been working very hard to support their big family. Grandmother ensured that all their children were able to receive sufficient education. And maybe, because of her hard life since young, she did not want her children to follow her old path. This was why she was very strict when she was bringing up her children.

It was also unforgettable that grandpa died early when their children were still young, grandmother had to hold the responsibility to take care of her whole family despite her being a lady. After her retirement, granny still did not have the times for relaxations. Grandmother was a nanny when she was in her sixties. It was the time when she had to take good of her children’s children who are her grandsons and granddaughters. It was not a comfortable task for an old lady to take care the bunch of playful and mischievous little children.

My parents have to work and thus it was not convenient for them to take care of me when I was very young. This was why I was brought to granny house early in the morning everyday, and my grandmother would look after me till my parents came to fetch me home in the evening. Grandmother not only had to take care of me, but also her other grandchildren who were born around my year. Grandmother would have a busy day whenever all my cousins were present. She would start off her day by buying breakfast for the hungry nippers, who were my cousins and I. During the late morning, she would bring us one by one to our pre school. Grandmother’s job seemed to be tough, but I still remembered vividly that she was always smiling as we said bye to granny.

Our dearest grandmother would then bring us home when Pre School was over. Granny took good care of our three meals and ensured that our meals were made fantabulous on the taste and the nutritional values. Grandmother was able to manage her household organized and substantial even without the help of anyone. Our caring and kindly grandmother do had a fierce side. Grandmother was always ready with her cane when some of us were out of control, she would scold and punish us with all her might’s when we were caught with deep troubles. This is why many of us did not stray away when we get older. We always remember our grandmother’s reprimand and the values she passed down to us.

Being a strong and independent woman, my grandmother had spent most of her life contributing to our big family. Having many members in this big family, granny had never showed inequity and biasness to anyone. Grandmother had loved us wholeheartedly; she had showered concern to us faithfully and she had taught her us to be a person with principles. She has made us feel jovial and cheery everyday with her warmth and smile.

Grandmother may have left me long ago, she may not have any tremendous heroic acts, she may not have saved the world, but she had given us a happy and blissful big family. My mighty grandmother will always be my hero in my heart.
