Everyone has role models whom they regard as heroes. When I was a child, I love comic book figures, among all, I adore Superman. Though Superman is my respected hero of all time, many incidences, events and circumstances that revolves around me and the society, have only present him as what I would perceive today as a ‘comic character trapped in the pages of a comic book’.
We live our lives doing the mundane things, but among the mundane things, we failed to notice our everyday heroes. In this case, my hero would be my mum. My wonder woman. Ever since I was young, I have seen her worked hard, sacrifices she had made, pains that she has to go through just so that she could raise and feed the family and ensure that the family is living a life that is beyond just the necessity, and until today, that she has managed to do it efficiently and successfully.
Among all this tough times that my mum had been through, she nevertheless succeed in ensuring the absolute wellbeing of my sister and I. As a teenager, I like to follow the trend of gadgets and gadgets are expensive and even so, my mum would bring me to the store just so that I could get a hold of the latest gadgets just to make sure that I am happy. Even though the economy was not doing very well, she has not gotten any sales for insurance lately, she would quietly keep it to herself and try to find solutions to the problems that she face and always have a positive mindset about life in general. This kept me going during my school years and as such, I did pretty well for school as I have learnt from her that I can be strong and conquer any difficulties that come my way and be courageous about it. Every single time, she would not fail to accompany me during my examinations period in the study room when I am busy mugging away even though she just had a tough day at work and needed a rest. Most importantly, she always said to me that if I try my best, God will do the rest. Even at times that when I fail, she had never scolded me but rather, she would encourage me to improve and try harder the next time round. As such, the pressures from school, peers and even from my dad diminishes as I knew in my heart that I have a supporter with me, that is, my mum.
My mum never fails to astonish me with her ability to handle many things at the same time. Not only has she got to work, she does all the housework at home and at the same time, she serves in the church as well. Irregardless of any circumstances, though she may fall, like a wonder woman, a hero, she would portray her inner courage and strength by carrying on the fight. What others may see as insignificant, to me, it helps me in my character building.
Therefore, though many circumstances may affect me directly and indirectly change my mindset or my outlook of life, I will not forget what Anthony Brandt had said, “Other things may change us, but we start and end with family”, and in my case, my hero who will always consistently pull me through and spurs me on, will nonetheless be my wonder woman, my beloved mum. She guides me through my first step in life, and quietly guides me even when i have learnt to walk on my own feet.
