In the 60's and early 70's when I was living along Paya Lebar Road, we had the bucket system. The truck came in the morning and the workers took away the bucket like they were carrying pails of water. I really hated it when the person in charge of our bucket was absent as were we had to beg others to clear it for us. When we moved into the HDB flat, we were so glad and happy with our new toilet.

Sometime in the 30s there was a strike of workers who emptied the buckets and my father dug a deep trench - I suppose it was called a latrine - and he emptied the waste into it, covering it each time to discourage the flies. I cannot remember if the strike lasted for long. We were lucky we had a garden! Rognvaldr
